Independent Testing & Performance Verification
Evidence Builds Confidence
Engineering decisions should never be based on marketing claims alone.
When protective coating systems are specified for critical infrastructure, consulting engineers, project owners and asset managers require objective evidence that the system will perform under the environmental conditions for which it is intended.
At Polymer Coatings Group, performance validation forms an integral part of our engineering philosophy.
Where applicable, our coating systems have undergone independent laboratory evaluation against internationally recognized test methods to verify corrosion protection, adhesion, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and long-term durability.
The purpose of testing is not simply to achieve impressive numbers.
It is to provide engineers with measurable performance data that can support specification decisions with confidence.
Why Independent Testing Matters
Every protective coating is exposed to a combination of deterioration mechanisms throughout its service life.
These include:
• Corrosion
• Ultraviolet degradation
• Mechanical abrasion
• Chemical attack
• Salt contamination
• Water immersion
• Thermal movement
Rather than relying on theoretical performance, these mechanisms can be simulated under controlled laboratory conditions using internationally recognized standards.
These tests provide repeatable data that enables coatings to be compared objectively and selected according to engineering requirements.
Performance Must Be Measured
Our systems have been evaluated using recognized international testing methodologies, including where applicable:
Corrosion Resistance
- Neutral Salt Spray Testing
- Long-term accelerated corrosion exposure
Adhesion Performance
- Pull-off adhesion testing
- Cohesive and adhesive failure analysis
Chemical Resistance
Evaluation against acidic and alkaline environments together with common industrial chemicals.
Abrasion Resistance
Resistance to mechanical wear under simulated service conditions.
Water & Immersion Resistance
Assessment under prolonged water and saltwater exposure.
UV & Weathering Performance
Long-term resistance to ultraviolet radiation, colour stability and coating integrity.
International Standards Provide a Common Engineering Language
Testing is conducted in accordance with internationally recognized standards where applicable, including:
ISO Standards
Used internationally for corrosion protection, environmental durability and coating classification.
Examples include:
• ISO 12944 — Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures
• ISO surface preparation standards
ASTM Standards
Used extensively throughout industry for laboratory performance evaluation.
Typical ASTM methods evaluate:
• Salt spray resistance
• Abrasion
• Adhesion
• Chemical resistance
• Mechanical properties
Independent Laboratory Verification
Where independently tested, recognized laboratories such as SGS provide third-party verification of performance data.
Independent verification gives consulting engineers greater confidence that published performance values are objective rather than internally generated.
Engineering Is About Evidence
A specification should never depend on assumptions.
It should depend on measurable engineering performance.
When selecting protective coating systems, engineers should ask questions such as:
- Has the system been independently tested?
- Which international standards were used?
- Is the published performance repeatable?
- Can the results be substantiated?
These questions reduce technical uncertainty and improve long-term asset reliability.
Our Engineering Philosophy
At Polymer Coatings Group, independent testing is not viewed as a marketing exercise.
It forms part of our engineering development process.
Performance data helps us:
- Design more durable systems.
- Improve long-term reliability.
- Validate engineering decisions.
- Support consulting engineers during specification.
- Reduce life-cycle risk for asset owners.
Ultimately, successful asset preservation is achieved through engineering discipline supported by measurable evidence.
Engineering Insight
Every coating manufacturer can publish performance claims.
Only independently verified performance data allows consulting engineers to specify with confidence.
Independent testing transforms a coating from a product description into an engineered solution supported by measurable evidence.
