Zinc Cathodic Duplex Coating System

Ultimate Zinc Cathodic Duplex System

Overview

The Polymer Coatings Zinc Cathodic Duplex System represents the pinnacle of electrochemical and barrier engineering for marine infrastructure. Specially formulated to combat the brutal corrosion profiles of the African continent, this system combines Zinc Guard (Active Galvanic Primer) and Zinc Extreme 2K Cathodic Coating (High-Build Barrier Topcoat).

By integrating active sacrificial zinc protection with an impermeable dielectric shield, the system triggers a powerful synergistic effect. This chemical bond extends the total structural service life up to 2.5 times longer than individual coating layers used independently. It delivers maximum asset lifecycle protection under severe structural stress.

South African Regulatory & Engineering Compliance (SANS / SABS Direct Equivalence)

To streamline project specification for South African asset owners, consulting engineers, and state-owned enterprises (such as Transnet and TNPA), this duplex system is fully certified to international standards that maintain direct equivalence and adoption under the South African National Standards (SANS) framework:

  • SANS 12944-6 / ISO 12944-6 (C5 & IM3 Compliance): Tested and fully compliant with SABS-adopted corrosion specifications. It meets the absolute highest requirements for local atmospheric maritime exposures (C5-Very High) and saltwater immersion (IM3).
  • SANS 8501-1 / ISO 8501-1 (Sa 2½ Visual Cleanliness): Application parameters directly align with SANS sandblasting purity baselines, ensuring seamless integration into local independent third-party paint inspection (NACE/AMPP) quality control workflows.
  • SANS 9227 / ISO 9227 (Salt Spray Chamber Validation): The chemical chemistry mirrors and exceeds local SABS-approved salt spray protocols, ensuring long-term resistance against intense, localized Indian Ocean and Atlantic salt-loading.

Extreme Maritime Performance & Lifecycle Projections

Engineered specifically for vessels, offshore platforms, and ports operating within the highly corrosive convergence of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean waters, this system provides uncompromising protection against high salinity, heavy wave-slapping friction, and intense UV exposure.

  • Coastal & Splash Zones: Offers a projected, maintenance-free asset lifecycle exceeding 15 to 25+ years along severe African coastlines.
  • Continuous Subsea Immersion: Formulated to preserve steel integrity under maximum hydrodynamic stress, marine hull friction, and harbor draft conditions.
  • Note: This duplex system provides foundational, long-term corrosion and cathodic disbondment protection; it does not include or function as a biocidal anti-fouling coating to prevent marine growth.

Mandatory Surface Preparation & Application Criteria

To achieve certified performance, maximum cross-linking, and the rated 24 MPa adhesion strength, strict adherence to the following substrate preparation standards is required prior to application:

  • Decontamination & Degreasing: All surfaces must be completely free of oil, grease, salt, and drilling muds. Conduct high-pressure fresh-water washing and solvent cleaning in strict accordance with SSPC-SP 1 / ISO 12944-4 benchmarks.
  • Abrasive Blast Cleaning: Blast clean the steel substrate to a minimum profile of Sa 2½ (Very Thorough Blast Cleaning) as defined by ISO 8501-1 / SANS 8501-1.
  • Surface Profile (Anchor Pattern): Achieve a sharp, angular surface profile of 50 to 75 microns. Rounded profiles from shot-blasting are not permitted; an aggressive profile is required to facilitate optimal mechanical anchoring.
  • Dust & Particle Removal: Prior to primer application, the blasted surface must be vacuum cleaned or blown down with dry, oil-free compressed air to meet ISO 8502-3 Class 1 dust quantity and size ratings.
  • Environmental Limitations: Do not apply coatings if the ambient temperature falls below 10°C or if the relative humidity exceeds 85%. The substrate temperature must remain at least 3°C above the calculated dew point at all times during application and curing.

Certified Engineering Credentials

This integrated duplex system fulfills and exceeds the most stringent global standards for structural steel protection in severe service environments:

  • ISO 12944-6 C5-H (Very High Marine / Coastal) Compliant: Successfully isolates underlying steel from severe atmospheric salt spray, high humidity, and aggressive coastal environments.
  • ISO 12944-6 IM3 (Saltwater Immersion) Certified: Passed 4,000 hours of continuous saltwater immersion testing with zero blistering, cracking, rust creep, or delamination.
  • ASTM B117 Salt Spray Testing Exceeded: Achieved a flawless 4,000+ hour combined spray benchmark with a 100% success rate and zero coating failure.
  • ASTM D4541 / ISO 4624 Adhesion Power: Delivers an exceptional pull-off adhesion strength of up to 24 MPa, ensuring the coating will not delaminate under heavy impact.

System Components

  1. Zinc Guard Basecoat: A high-purity cold-galvanizing compound that establishes active cathodic protection directly on blasted steel.
  2. Zinc 2K Cathodic Barrier Coating: A chemically cross-linked, two-component topcoat that locks down the zinc layer, blocking moisture ingress and maximizing structural durability.
