Pool Epoxy Coating System : Primer-Based
Pool Epoxy Coating System – Primer-Based
Engineered Pool Rehabilitation & Permanent Immersion Protection System
Professional Epoxy Pool Coating for Concrete, Marbelite, Fibreglass & Steel Swimming Pools
The Polymer Coatings Group Pool Epoxy Coating System – Primer-Based, is a professionally engineered two-component polyamide epoxy lining system, developed for the rehabilitation, waterproofing and long-term protection of swimming pools and permanently immersed structures.
Unlike conventional pool paints that focus primarily on appearance, this engineered system is designed to restore deteriorated pool surfaces while creating a durable protective lining capable of withstanding continuous water immersion, pool treatment chemicals, thermal movement and long-term environmental exposure.
Suitable for residential, commercial and institutional applications, the system provides a proven solution for extending the service life of ageing pool infrastructure while reducing future maintenance requirements.
The Engineering Challenge
Swimming pools represent one of the most demanding environments for protective coating systems.
Whether constructed from reinforced concrete, marbelite, fibreglass or steel, pool structures are continually exposed to:
- Permanent water immersion
- Hydrostatic pressure
- Chlorinated and chemically treated water
- Dissolved salts and minerals
- Ultraviolet degradation above the waterline
- Thermal expansion and contraction
- Surface abrasion from regular use
- Biological fouling, algae and staining
Over time these conditions can result in surface deterioration, increased porosity, water ingress, coating failure and costly refurbishment.
Successful pool restoration therefore requires more than simply applying a new coating—it requires an engineered lining system designed specifically for permanent immersion service.
Engineering System Design
The Pool Epoxy Coating System is engineered as a complete multi-layer protection system, with each component performing a specific engineering function.
Stage 1 – Surface Assessment & Preparation
Long-term coating performance begins with proper substrate preparation.
Existing coatings, contamination, laitance and deteriorated material must be removed to create a clean, mechanically sound substrate capable of achieving optimum adhesion.
Surface preparation remains one of the most critical factors influencing coating performance and service life.
Stage 2 – Engineering Primer System
The primer forms the critical interface between the substrate and the protective epoxy lining.
The correct primer is selected according to the substrate type:
Concrete, Marbelite & Fibreglass Pools
A penetrating polymer primer promotes excellent adhesion while reducing substrate porosity and improving long-term bond strength.
Steel Pool Structures
A zinc phosphate anti-corrosive primer provides enhanced adhesion together with corrosion protection beneath the epoxy lining system.
Stage 3 – High-Build Epoxy Protective Lining
The finishing layer consists of a high-solids, two-component polyamide epoxy coating engineered to create a dense, chemically resistant protective barrier.
Once fully cured, the lining provides excellent resistance against:
- Continuous water immersion
- Normal swimming pool treatment chemicals
- Moisture penetration
- Surface abrasion
- Weathering
- General environmental exposure
The smooth, non-porous finish also assists with routine cleaning and helps reduce the accumulation of algae, dirt and other biological fouling, contributing to easier ongoing maintenance.
Engineering Performance Characteristics
The cured Pool Epoxy Coating System provides:
- Excellent adhesion to correctly prepared concrete, marbelite, fibreglass and steel substrates.
- High-build protective lining for increased durability.
- Excellent resistance to continuous water immersion.
- Resistance to normal swimming pool chemical treatment programmes.
- Reduced moisture permeability.
- High abrasion resistance.
- Smooth, hygienic surface that simplifies routine cleaning.
- Excellent long-term durability under normal operating conditions.
- Attractive, professional finish available in multiple colours.
Typical Engineering Applications
The system is recommended for:
- Reinforced concrete swimming pools
- Marbelite swimming pools
- Gunnite pool structures
- Fibreglass swimming pools
- Steel swimming pools
- Corrugated and IBR sheet swimming pool structures
- Resort and hotel swimming pools
- Municipal and institutional pools
- Decorative water features
- Koi ponds*
- Aquaculture ponds*
*Suitable once fully cured and where the operating environment is compatible with the system specification.
Why Choose a Primer-Based Pool Epoxy Coating System?
Many premature coating failures are not caused by the epoxy itself, but by inadequate substrate preparation or the omission of an appropriate primer.
The Polymer Coatings Group system is engineered around proper substrate preparation, primer compatibility and controlled film build to maximize long-term adhesion and coating performance.
This engineering approach helps reduce the likelihood of delamination, blistering and premature coating failure while delivering a durable, long-life protective lining.
