THE COST OF CORROSION SERIES™|FIELD OBSERVATION #8 Why Mining Infrastructure Corrodes Aggressively picture

Based on real-world observations from mining infrastructure.

Mining is one of the harshest environments any protective coating system will ever face.
Dust.
Moisture.
Chemical exposure.
Abrasion.
UV radiation.
Mechanical impact.
Individually, each is challenging.
Together, they create the perfect conditions for accelerated corrosion.

But here's something I've observed over many years.
Mining companies rarely notice corrosion first.
They notice reduced production.
Unexpected shutdowns.
Equipment that's unavailable when it's needed.
Only later do they discover that corrosion has quietly been contributing to the problem all along.
That's why I often say:
Corrosion isn't just a maintenance issue.
It's a production issue.
Every unplanned repair interrupts operations.
Every unexpected shutdown consumes maintenance resources.
Every year lost from an asset's design life increases the total cost of ownership.
The question shouldn't be:
"How often do we need to repaint?"
The better question is:
"How do we extend the operational life of this asset?"

Across Southern Africa—from the copper mines of Zambia, the uranium operations of Namibia, the diamond and copper sectors of Botswana, to South Africa's coal, iron ore, manganese and platinum industries—the challenge remains the same:
Keeping critical infrastructure operating safely, reliably and profitably.

At Polymer Coatings Group, that's the philosophy behind every engineered corrosion protection system we develop.
Our objective isn't simply to protect steel.
It's to help preserve the assets that keep production moving.

Engineering Principle #8
Corrosion should be managed as part of an asset reliability strategy—not simply as a maintenance activity.
Corrosion is inevitable. | Premature failure isn't.

Question for Mining Professionals
What has the biggest impact on long-term asset reliability at your operation?
Abrasion, chemical exposure, corrosion—or the combination of all three?
I'd be interested to hear your experience.
