Over the years I've investigated coating failures on marine structures, processing plants and industrial steelwork. One lesson appears time and again...

Many people expect a coating to act like a sheet of glass.
Apply it correctly and nothing gets through!

Unfortunately, coatings don't work that way.
Every protective coating, regardless of manufacturer, contains a degree of permeability.

Given enough time, moisture, oxygen and environmental exposure, molecules begin moving through the coating film.
The process is slow, often invisible.
But it never completely stops.

This is particularly important in aggressive environments such as:
• Ports and harbors
• Coastal infrastructure
• Offshore facilities
• Mining operations
• Process plants
• Tank farms
• Pipelines
In these environments, coatings are constantly challenged by moisture, salt exposure, temperature cycling and mechanical stress.

Over time, water can migrate through the coating film and eventually reach the steel surface.
Once corrosion begins beneath the coating, the consequences become familiar:
Blistering.
Delamination.
Rust staining.
Premature maintenance.
Unexpected repair costs.

This doesn't mean barrier coatings don't work.
Far from it.
Barrier coatings remain one of the most important tools available for protecting steel assets.
Their purpose is simple:
Slow the movement of moisture and contaminants for as long as possible.
The better the barrier, the longer the steel remains protected.
The longer the steel remains protected, the longer the asset remains in service.
